Jerusalem
July 26, 2001
After protracted negotiations with the Israeli authorities, the Anglican
Bishop in Jerusalem, The Rt. Rev. Riah Abu El-Assal, together with the Dean
of St. George's Cathedral, The Very Rev. Michael H. Sellors, today visited
Mr. Mordechai Vanunu in Ashkelon Prison and shared together in celebration
of Holy Communion followed by lengthy conversation.
Mordechai was in good health and resilient in spirit even though he
believes he continues to be held in prison on account of his faith.
He is convinced that nuclear weapons are catastrophic for all humanity,
especially here in the Middle East and longs for the day when all such
weapons are abolished.
He is equally convinced that peace will only come to this Land as a result
of the determined efforts of Christians committed to truth and justice the
world over.
