Vanunu: Humanist of the Year
The Church of Humanism has honored Mordechai Vanunu by electing him
Humanist of the Year for 2000. In his letter informing the imprisoned
honoree of the award, Rev. Joseph Ben-David told Vanunu, "You are honest,
courageous, and morally highly motivated, and the great sacrifice you have
made serves to protect not only those living in Israel but all the peoples
of the Middle East and perhaps in the world."
The award also calls on the President of Israel to free Vanunu with an
immediate grant of clemency.
Previous Humanists of the Year include Rev. Daniel Berrigan, Vaclav Havel,
and Leonard Peltier.
