PETITION to the NORWEGIAN NOBEL COMMITTEEWe, the undersigned, urge your committee to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Mordechai Vanunu for his heroic act of conscience, his continuing valiant sacrifice and his unwavering commitment to the cause of peace. For accurately revealing, to the people of Israel and to the world, the proliferation of nuclear weapons that was occurring clandestinely in one of the world's most strife-ridden regions, he was drugged, kidnapped and subjected to a judicial prosecution devoid of due process. Long secret, recently declassified documents of his trial have exposed the hypocrisy of his opponents and confirmed the purity of his intentions. After his illegal arrest and prosecution he was sentenced to an eighteen-year prison term. Mr. Vanunu, an Amnesty International "prisoner of conscience," endured the first eleven and a half years of his continuing imprisonment in the barbarous condition of solitary confinement. We urge the committee to acknowledge Mr. Vanunu's extraordinary contribution to the cause of nuclear disarmament. His disclosure of information was essential to public understanding and to democratizing the international debate on nuclear weapons policy. We commend the Norwegian Nobel Committee for its serious consideration of Mr. Vanunu for the Nobel Peace Prize. He fully deserves the honor that only your committee can confer on him. Because the deplorable injustice of his imprisonment has lasted fourteen years and is continuing, we join with thousands of people from around the world to urge the Norwegian Nobel Committee to act with resolute speed to bestow its internationally esteemed award on Mr. Vanunu at the next opportunity.
