A Plea for Mordechai Vanunu
Please write or e-mail The Hon. Pierre Pettigrew calling his attention to Mordechai Vanunu's need for refugee status which Canada can and should grant. Please ask that Canada offer him refugee status through our Embassy in Tel Aviv and arrange with the Israeli authorities that Canadian officials assist in providing safe passage for him from Jerusalem to Canada.
You might want to point out that Canada supports the aim of a nuclear-free Middle East and restrictions on the spread and further development of nuclear weapons. As a democracy, Canada supports the right to dissent, to conscientious objection, and the right to emigrate. More than anyone else, Mordechai Vanunu has suffered for his conscientious stand for nuclear disarmament, a nuclear-free Middle East in a world which would no longer be threatened by the use of nuclear weapons. He continues to suffer serious restrictions on his freedom and is at risk of assaults on his person and of re-incarceration should he exercise the normal freedoms of a citizen in a genuinely democratic state.
People are still at risk from the use of nuclear weapons. That risk may have increased since the collapse of the USSR.As is well known, Israel has as many as 200 or so nuclear warheads and the capacity, as well as the will under various conditions, to use them. The Bush Administration has given its nuclear scientists the go-ahead to design "small" nuclear bombs which could be used against non-nuclear "rogue" states in its "war against terrorism". Iran may be developing its own nuclear deterrent and it may be next on the Sharon/Bush "hit list". In these increasingly dangerous times, it is essential that Mordechai Vanunu's message be heard.
Of course the Government of Israel wants to silence him, wants to keep the issue of its nuclear arsenal and the risks of its use out of public view whenever it can, and when it cannot, to play the game of "strategic ambiguity". Mordechai should be free to speak out about the need for nuclear disarmament, the need for peace in the Middle East, and the need for the freeing of the Palestinian people which that peace requires. Please urge your friends to join you in convincing our Government to give Mordechai Vanunu the freedom he deserves, the freedom the Government of Israel insists on denying him, the freedom he has suffered for.
